HEALTH BENEFITS OF OIL PULLING

Last week I started something which is probably pretty new to some of you, but is actually an ancient way to cleanse yourself. When I first read the words "oil pulling" I was kinda disgusted by it. I didn't know what it meant, so I was making up my own definitions. Although it seems like a pretty nasty thing, to put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and spit it out after 20 minutes, it's actually not that bad once you've started. Oil pulling has amazing health benefits and I'm finally going to try it for 30 days. Depending on my experiences, I might stop or continue after these 30 days. It is a very "trendy" thing to do nowadays apparently. I noticed this once I started doing some online research. I actually found out about it in a book about ancient detox rituals. I've started last Monday and I'm so excited about it that I decided to share my journey.

Let me explain you a bit about what oil pulling is and what it can do for you. I'll be back after I've finished the 30 days to tell you what happened during my experience and if I will continue. There is not much I can tell you up to this point only that the challenge is "on"!! After 7 days I'm pretty much used to it. It is too early to tell the benifits, something is changing, but I can't quite tell you yet what it is.

WHAT IS OIL PULLING?

Oil pulling (kavala graha) is a natural way to detoxify the body. This technique is centuries old and is originally from 3000 years old Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurveda is a health science that originated in India and is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO). Oil pulling is already mentioned in the Charaka Samhita, one of the ancient Sanskrit texts where these health teachings are based. Kavala means "mouth washing" and graha meands "to grab". In other words you could say, when moving around oil in your mouth, the oil grabs toxins in your mouth and by spitting it out, the oil pulls them out. Oil pulling has so many benefits, the most important one; it detoxifies your body and brings balance to your overall health. Let me give you a few examples of benefits...

These are just a few benefits. Everybody experiences it differently, because nobody is the same, but these are the most common:

Oral Hygiene: Cures tooth decay | Kills bad breath | Heals bleeding gums | Whitens teeth | Strengthens gums and jaw | Soothes throat dryness

Improves Skin: Improves acne | Heals cracked lips | Reduction of rashes and skin issues

Overall Health Benefits: Detoxes the body | Boosts immune system | Aids hormonal changes | Reduces inflammation | Increases energy

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Most oil pullers start first thing in the morning. The oil which is used most (I use it as well) is coconut oil. You can do your daily rituals during the oil pulling; shower, get dressed, make a breakfast. The usual amount is one tablespoon. You might want to take a little more or less, depending on the size of your mouth. It needs to be a comfortable amount for you to be able to mix it with your saliva. It is not a mouth wash, don't gargle. Just calmly move the oil around in your mouth in your oral cavities and over your teeth. Do not swallow it, but if it happens by accident don't freak out, it's not a big deal. The time you want to keep the oil in your mouth depends on the complaints you have. 5 to 20 minutes will suffice. Spit the oil (preferably in the trashcan on a piece of tissue, else you might clog the sink). Wash your mouth with warm water. I like to right away brush my teeth afterwards. If your schedule allows it, wait 30 minutes with eating your breakfast. Image Source: Food Matters

FULLY RAW RASPBERRY CHOCOLATE FUDGE SQUARES

I'm a HUGE fan of Fully Raw Kristina and always inspired by her recipes! One of her recent recipes I just couldn't resist and had to share it with you. These healthy fully raw Raspberry Chocolate Fudge Squares are divine!! You can eat as many of these little babies as you like, they are raw vegan, without any dairy, sugars or additives. Have it for breakfast, lunch or dinner.. all day every day baby! I will be making these for Christmas (and before that at least a couple times!). YOU, yes YOU, fashion lover, fashion blogger... this is a MUST-READ and a MUST-SEE for you! I decided to share this post again because I've been shocked about the lack of care from my followers. It definately pisses me off that everyone only wants to read the "fun" stuff, but when it comes to hard reality, people just turn around and walk away. So let's try this again :)..

One of the reasons why I started designing clothing made from recycled materials was really simple; I didn't want to be part of the fashion industry as it exists today. The exploitation and waste were my biggest reasons. I've always been aware of the exploitation in 3rd world countries and the extremely poor conditions factory workers are living in, but some things were unknown to me. This week I watched The True Cost | A Documentary Film and I am even more disgusted than I was before. 90% of my wardrobe is either second hand, vintage, handmade or organic/fair trade, but after seeing this documentary there is NO WAY IN HELL I will be visiting fast fashion brands ever again.

HOW TO TRAVEL AND STAY HEALTHY

Do you have a vacay incoming? Flying somehwhere? I'm not!! :P Taking it easy for the Summer at home, well more "in the neighbourhood". The nicest thing about Europe and living in the south of the Netherlands is easy access to 2 other countries. Within 30 minutes I drive myself into Belgium and within an hour I am in Germany (France and Denmark 3, also the UK will only take me 20 minutes by plane). I don't feel bad not traveling far, I have many options next door! :P

For the ones who are flying to an exotic place somewhere on the globe, I found a really nice article at Food Matters about how to stay healthy while traveling, it's really not that difficult as you might think!

With a few simple and easy tricks you can stay healthy and refreshed while on the move!

Summer is finally here! Not that the Netherlands is ready for Summer weather (never know what to expect over here!), but the days are getting warmer and I was so happy I could finally start with garden photoshoots together with my beautiful model Jewel. We shot the Summer layout this weekend and it looks awesome! I used a watercolor manadala painting in the layout I painted about 2 years ago. Never thought about using it for my graphics. Me likee a lot!! Whatcha think?

Fully Raw Kristina

Hey y'all!

Time for some more health stuff! Today I want to introduce you to Fully Raw Kristina. She is a fully raw vegan, a free spirit and artist, living in Houston TX and she is SO AWESOME!! She is the founder of the largest raw, organic produce co-operative in the U.S. and has been eating 100% raw for almost 10 years. She overcame hyperglycemia by taking on a fully raw lifestyle. She is an amazing person and such a great inspiration in my life! Her Youtube channel Fully Raw Kristina is so inspirational! Here she shares her fully raw recipes, advice and personal stories about her lifestyle.
As some of you might know, I live a very healthy life style, 99% of my diet is vegan and about 75% fully raw (and organic of course!). I live in the Netherlands and I wish I could transform to a fully raw vegan lifestyle, but unfortunately the weather doesn't let me, I love my warm vegan meals too much in Autumn and Winter and I choose not to miss them (yet!). It's way easier to live a fully raw lifestyle in Texas :). Pretty jealous of Kristina she lives in a warm climate!

Harmful Sun Protection Products & Ingredients | MUST READ

Hey girls!!! I've missed y'all!! Work has been killing me again, almost litteraly (stress caused a double ear infection, hooray!). Anyway, all good now and back to blogging. I haven't been around for a while, but I have some pretty awesome stuff lined up to share with you girlies. Will also be catching up with everyone again.

Ok, lets start off with some very important health stuff! This article is an absolute must-read! Finally the sun is breaking through in The Netherlands, which means sunscreen (to protect my vampire-like skin). As some of you might know, I'm a crazy health freak, especially when it comes to chemicals in beauty products. Oh my, you don't even know what you are putting on your skin ladies, pure toxins! Many ingredients in commercial sunscreens harm the skin, can cause cancer and many other scary diseases (..how crazy is that? You want to protect yourself from the sun and possible skin cancer by sun damage and they are putting ingredients in you sunscreen which actually cause cancer. Seriously wtf?!). Do not fall for the pretty commericals and fake promises. You are being misguided to the fullest.

Educate yourself on what you put on your skin. Everything that you apply on your skin will enter your body... check the ingredients! Packing for your vacation or love the spend time in the sun? These items should never make it into your suitcase, beach bag or backpack.

I use products by Ladival. No cancer causing ingredients. It protects what it needs to protect, without any useless crap. And it has an experation date!! Ever wondered why most sunscreens don't have experation dates on the bottle? Think about it....

7 Tips For Fun in the Sun | List via Food Matters by EWG

1. No Spray Sunscreens

Given the ease of applying them on squirming kids and hard-to-reach areas, these super-popular aerosolized sunscreens may seem like a dream come true. But they may pose serious inhalation risks. They certainly make it too easy to apply too little or miss a spot. Even though the Food and Drug Administration has expressed concern about the safety and efficacy of spray sunscreens, companies continue to turn them out.

2. No Super-High SPFs

Products with sky-high SPFs may protect against sunburn but could leave your skin exposed to damaging UVA rays. SPF stands for “sun protection factor,” and refers only to protection against UVB radiation, which burns the skin. It has little to do with protection from sun’s UVA rays, which penetrate deep into the skin, suppress the immune system, accelerate skin aging and may cause skin cancer.

Fifteen percent of the sunscreens evaluated in EWG’s 2014 sunscreen guide boasts SPFs higher than SPF 50+. These high-SPF products may give people a false sense of security, tempt them to stay in the sun too long, suppress sunburns but upping the risk of other kinds of skin damage. The FDA is considering limiting SPF claims to 50+, as is done in other countries. EWG recommends that consumers avoid products labeled with anything higher than SPF 50 and reapply sunscreen often, regardless of SPF.

3. No Oxybenzone

Commonly used in sunscreens, the chemical oxybenzone penetrates the skin, gets into the bloodstream and acts like estrogen in the body. It can trigger allergic reactions. Data are preliminary, but studies have found a link between higher concentrations of oxybenzone and health harms. One study has linked oxybenzone to endometriosis in older women; another found that women with higher levels of oxybenzone during pregnancy had lower birth weight daughters. More than 40 percent of all beach and sport sunscreens in this year’s guide contain oxybenzone.

4. No Retinyl Palmitate

When used in a night cream, this form of vitamin A is supposed to have anti-aging effects. But on sun-exposed skin, retinyl palmitate may speed development of skin tumors and lesions, according to government studies. Why is this “inactive ingredient” allowed in sunscreens intended for use in the sun? Good question.

The FDA has yet to rule on the safety of retinyl palmitate in skin care products, but EWG recommends that consumers avoid sunscreens containing this chemical. Twenty percent of the sunscreens, and 12 percent of SPF-rated moisturizers in this year’s guide contains retinyl palmitate.

5. No Combined Sunscreen/Bug Repellents

Skip products that combine bug repellent with sunscreen. Why? For starters, bugs are typically not a problem during the hours when UV exposure peaks. Also, sunscreen may need to be reapplied more frequently than repellent, or vice versa. We recommend that you avoid using repellents on your face, too. Studies suggest that combining sunscreens and repellents leads to increased skin absorption of the repellent ingredients. EWG recommends that you skip these products.

6. No Sunscreen Towelettes Or Powders

FDA’s sunscreen rules bar sunscreen wipes and powders. But some small online retailers are still offering towelettes and powders. Don’t buy them. Why? Dubious sun protection. Besides, inhaling loose powders can cause lung irritation or other harm…

7. No Tanning Oils

Tanning oils are simply a bad idea. If they contain sunscreen ingredients, the levels are always very low and offer little, if any, sun protection. Don’t buy products with SPF values lower than 15, nor those without either zinc oxide or avobenzone for UVA protection.

Other cancer causing ingredients in sunscreens you MUST AVOID (will explain why in a next post):

BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE and BENZETHONIUM CHLORIDE, DIETHANOLAMINE (DEA), HYDROQUINONE, BENZPENONE-3(another name for OXYBENZONE).

Free People Wild & Free Lookbook

Although I'm pretty pissed with Free People lately, I can't help myself to share this awesome Wild & Free Lookbook. Prices are getting way too high and somehow the quality is getting worse, have anyone else noticed this? Anyway, things still look so divine, that's why I go back again and again. Every time I buy something online (unfortunately Europe doesn't have FP stores) I pray that the item I bought is of good quality. Luckily I'm a clothing designer and know how to repair, but well, that shouldn't suppose to happen to clothing around 100 bucks. Seriously ridic! Anyway, complained enough :). I'm in love with this lookbook!! Isn't it gorgeous?

10 All Natural Healing Teas

Oh my, I have been ill, it was absolutely ridiculous. Remember the sick deadline ? That totally f-ed me up! I'm a health freak, but the stress and exhaustion from this period of none stop work really broke my immune system. But all is(almost) better now and time to share some healthy stuff! Hope you are all well :), will be catching up in a bit!

Flu incoming? Drink herbal tea!! There’s nothing as comforting as herbal tea. It warms the insides, and promotes an instant feeling of calm and well being. Herbal teas also carry many health benefits. I'm a tea freak, sick or not. Here are some of my favorites!

1. Dandelion and chicory root: Dandelion roots act as a blood purifier that helps both kidneys and the liver to remove impurities. It is also high in potassium and helps to improve appetite and digestion. Chicory is a bitter digestive tonic that increases bile flow and decreases inflammation. It also supports the action of the stomach and liver and cleanses the urinary tract.

2. Peppermint: Improves digestion, eases nausea and vomiting, reduces heartburn, dissolves gallstones, fights bad breath, relieves stress, and acts as a pain reliever. I make my own peppermint tea using fresh mint for my garden. It’s super easy to grow!

3. Pau D’arco: Great for eliminating Candida, purifying the blood, strengthening the immune system, protecting the liver, and beneficial while healing cancer.

4. Soursop: A potent healer, soursop tea (made from the leaves of the soursop tree) is very beneficial to those healing from cancer. It purifies the blood, aids detoxification, promotes clear skin, is high in vitamin C, contains rich amounts of antioxidants to fight free radical damage, is great for the liver, and improves digestive health.

5. Ginger: Relieves nausea, combats motion sickness, helps digestive processes, combats inflammation, reduces dizziness, limits flatulence, controls chronic pain, eases muscle aches and rheumatoid arthritis, minimizes symptoms of the common cold, allergies, and other respiratory conditions.

6. Valerian: Is great for promoting deeper sleep and helps treat chronic insomnia and sleeplessness, soothes and sedates the nervous system, helps calm hysteria and restlessness, alleviates menstrual problems, soothes the digestive system, help lower the blood pressure, may inhibit the growth of tumors.

7. Rooibos: Rich in mineral content, promoting healthy skin, teeth and bones. High in antioxidants, and is great longevity.

8. Rosehip: One of the best plant sources of vitamin C, which is important for the immune system, skin and tissue health and adrenal function.

9. Cleavers: Awesome for stimulating the lymphatic system (it’s traditionally used to treat lymph cancers), treating urinary tract infections, treating jaundice, purifying the blood, and healing wounds.

10. Little China Teas: Made from medicinal organic Chinese herbs, these teas really are healing teas. You should tey Longevity Tonic, made with Ju Hua (chrysanthemum flower), Huang Qi – Astragalus, Dang Shen, Zi Su Ye – (purple perilla leaf), Sheng Jiang (ginger), Bo He – (field mint), and the Up-Lift, made with Goji (wolfberry), gou qi zi, ginseng, dang shen, perilla (zi su) and Bo He (Chinese field mint).

The Bohemian Dream Spring 2015

After a crazy 3 weeks I'm back blogging yet again :P! I keep on getting these crazy last minute deadlines. You know those kind of "no time to eat nor sleep" deadlines, really unhealthy. Well, I survived again and I'm done with any deadlines for a couple of weeks. The past few weeks I had to design a Spring layout, design a few garments for a magazine and make a stock of about 100 pieces because my model had to go into surgery and will not be able to work for 2 months. Sitting back, relaxing and catching up with y'all. Sharing my new layout and some new The Bohemian Dream pieces today.
